Hello Steve,

I would recommend the following site:
http://www.return2style.de/homepage.htm

You can find many infos about the all-day-culture from the 20s to the 40s. These include some examples of popular music from that era. If you are looking for CDs with German music from the war time you may search at some online book-stores for music by the following interprets:

Marika Roekk, Zarah Leander, Johannes Heesters, Hans Albers, Heinz Ruehmann, Ilse Werner, Rosita Serrano or Evelyn Kuennecke.

Well known German dance orchestras of that period were those of:

Michael Jary, Kurt Widmann, Adolf Steimel, Kurt Hohenberger, Lutz Templin, Erhard Bauschke or 'Das Deutsche Tanz- und Unterhaltungsorchester'.

With the exception of Lili Marlene (with English lyrics), I doubt that any German music would be heard in Canada during the war years.

I best remember Praise the Lord (And Pass the Ammunition), Spike Jones's In Der Fuehrer's Face, Let's Remember Pearl Harbor, and of course the various corps and branch hymns of the U.S. forces. In Canada, no doubt Vera Lynn would top the charts. We'll Meet Again, and When the Lights Go On Again (All Over the World).

all the best

Try the 'Voices of World War II' website, http://www.umkc.edu/lib/spec-col/ww2/main.htm

They have quite a few songs in Real Audio format, as well as radio broadcasts (news and advertisements). It's an interesting site.

There is a book which covers *American* culture on the home-front during the war which includes info on music. It's 'Don't You Know There's a War On? The American Home Front, 1941-1945' by Richard R. Lingeman. The review indicates that it covers pretty much all aspects of civilian life which were affected by the war.

There is a binaries newsgroup that specializes in early recorded music. the 'Whitburn' collections based on top hits of a given year are frequently posted there, currently on the server is 1928-1930. Mostly US and British tunes. Wartime songs are often posted there.

I guess you mean a song called 'Nun brausen nach Osten die Heere...' - also known as 'Von Finnland bis zum Schwarzen Meer'. This march song was composed by Norbert Schultze who also composed 'Lilli Marleen'. Within the German weekly news movie ('Wochenschau' it served as kind of a 'theme song' for the campaign in Russia.
