Has anyone ever heard of this project?

It seems te be connected to operation NEPTUNE (an alias of operation Overlord?) and a proposed landing in the Netherlands but I can not find it on the list of military operations in Eisenhower's 'Crusade in Europe'.

Thanks in advance.

I have seen references to 'Cinderella' in British WWII records. Apparently, in this context it had to do with plans in the case of an invasion of Britain (the records are subseries 'action on invasion' and 'defense schemes'. Such planning was apparently very active up through 1942. Though speculative, allied amphibious planners could have turned around studies of a potential Nazi invasion of England and used

them to assist in planning the other way around.

summoned the courage to write:

It is a little confusing. Cinderella (note spelling) seems to be a nickname for the operation in autumn 1944 to open the Scheldt estuary, involving the capture of Walcheren Island (your address, which presumably explains your interest). The official name of the operation was 'Infatuate'. Something makes me doubt that a major operation would have been formally given the name 'Cinderella'

There were various phases of the opening of the Scheldt, with different codenames, Switchback (amhpibious op, Breskens), Vitality I and II (South Beveland) and Infatuate I and II (Westkapelle and Flushing). Gerald Rawling wrote a book called 'Cinderella Operation' describing these battles. By using this term he meant that the operation was given low priority in terms of manpower and support (as were all the Canadian ops in 1944), in spite in theory Eisenhower giving the task of opening the Scheldt the highest urgency.

Thanks for your explanation.

We are busy founding a Dyke and War Museum in Westkapelle but I could not place 'Operation Cinderella'. Now it appears to be a nickname for the combined operation of opening the river Scheldt.

I expect to be able to announce the opening of this museum on this newsgroup in a few weeks.

Arie.

During the 1 1/2 year, that Walcheren was inundated (October 1944- March 1946) the dukw played in important role in military and civilian transport. Can anybody tell me from which words this acronym is formed?

But doesn't it have *four* driving wheels in the rear in addition to the two in front? Or is one set just idlers?
