I am doing some research into Operation Houndsmith. This was an operation where 144 SAS men went into Occupied France to help the resistance.

My interest is that I believe my Grandfather was one of the members of the operation. He didn't talk about it very much and is sadly no longer with us, but what he did say fits with what I do know about the operation.

I would like to find out more about it, there doesn't seem to be much information out there on the net.

Does anyone have any tips? I am already trying to get his service record but my interest has expanded from his involvement to the actual operation itself. I would ideally like to get a list of all those involved so that I can put together a picture of what happened and how it relates to what he did tell me. I have been searching to see if I can find a record of the actual operation but to no avail, I will be contating the MOD this week to see if they have anything that they can help me with.

Quite a big task I know but it is facinating and the personal involvment adds an extra dimension.

Regard, Neil Weller

Dear Neil,

In 1944 around the time of the D-day landings there was an SAS operation named HoundsWORTH to the Morvan Mountains between Dijon and Nevers.

The is briefly described in the official history, in the volume 'SOE in France' by M.R.D. Foot at page 404.

Best of luck,
