What ranks did these three US generals hold at the time of Pearl Harbor?

Patton was commanding officer of the 3rd Cavalry between 1938 and 1940 and as promoted to Brig-Gen in 1940 (so I would conclude he was a Colonel before then).

Clark was a staff officer with the 3rd Infantry Divison 1937 to 1940. he became a Brig-Gen in August 1941 (so I would conclude he was also a Colonel before then).

Bradley was with the War Department General Staff from June 1938 to February 1941 when he was promoted to Brig-Gen (so I would conclude he was also a Colonel before then).

Omar Bradley was promoted Brigadier General in Feb 1941 and took command of 82nd Infantry Div in Feb 1942 (at which point he was presumably promoted to major general??).

George Patton was a Major General when the war started, commanding 2nd Armored Div.

I can't find out exactly what rank Clark held in late 1941, however he attended General Staff School & the Army War College in the the 1930s and his first operational command was as deputy commander for Operation Torch. Prior to that he was a Lt Colonel in 1940 but promoted to Army Chief of Staff by early 1942! When war broke out he was assistant chief of staff (operations) for the US Army. This would seem to imply he was a Major General in 41/42 as he was later (1943) promoted Lt General to command Fifth Army, as well as having a talent for promoting his career

Cheers

Had Eisenhower mad BG yet also ? IIRC he had been the chief of staff for one of the Louisiana maneuvers in September 1941 and still a LTC.

Eisenhower was appointed to the temporary rank of colonel on March 11, 1941 and to the temporary rank of brigadier general on September 29, 1941.

He wasn't however, promoted to the permanent rank of brigadier general until August of 1943 - some considerable time after he had been promoted to the temporary rank of full general.

So far as command authority and responsibilities were concerned, there was no distinction between temporary and permanent ranks however.

Cheers and all,

Oh yes! He was fast-tracked, making colonel in March 1941 and brigadier general in September.

Note that the question specified December 7. The U.S. was gearing up for war in 1941. The answers would have been very different had the poster used a date of December 1940.

Eisenhower had made full colonel in March '41, a couple of months before being posted as chief of staff to MGen Krueger. After the maneuvers in September he was promoted to brigadier general.

Clark, USMA class of '17 to Eisenhower's class of '15, made brigadier general in July 1941, which really galled Ike according to the D'Este
