We are having current problems in Iraq. Was there any / much organized German resistance after cessation of hostilities? If so: What was scope of Allied casualties? How long did resistance last? Scope of resistance groups? Names, leaders. Is there book on this subject? (Have tried sets of Google searches ... No Luck)

There was one that came out a couple of years ago, I believe. At least it was on offer from the Military Book Club at the time. I don't recall the exact title, but if you do a web search under 'Werewolf' and 'World War II' you will likely come up with something.

Perhaps you have used the worng words. The name of the organisation was Wehrwolf. I've just tried this in Google and found the following link: http://www.worldhistory.com/wiki/W/Wehrwolf.htm at Wikipedia.

Virtually none, depending on your definition of 'organized.' In Japan, none whatsoever. Of course, both these nations were well and throroughly beaten over a period of years, and the soldiers (and civilians) wanted nothing more than to get home and rebuild their lives.

That's a spelling mistake, probably caused by the fact that Wehr means defense and even resistance. But Werwolf has nothing to do with that word; it simply means werewolf. If the Wikipedia compilator doesn't know that, then I wouldn't trust he's really knowledgeable.

IIRC, we went into Germany prepared to deal with collapsed government and infrastructure and were not shy about using some of the less blatant Nazi's if they could get the water running, food distributed, etc. Most of the population was war weary and willing to support a stabilizing effort. There was a bigger problem with DP's forming roaming bands of brigands and with former concentration camp inmates who were interested in vengeance.

Joe,

This subject was raised some time ago in this newsgroup and someone quoted the book below. Looks like it will be released this year yet.

THE LAST NAZIS SS Werewolf Guerrilla Resistance in Europe 1944-1947 by Perry Biddiscombe

As concerns orgins of Werwolf I found and interesting reference in the Norman Davies' RISING' 44. Davies cites certain Nazi official who was working on organisation of German resistance. This official stated that Germans decided to use as example organisation of their toughest opponent in the undeground Europe, i.e. Polish Home Army (Armia Krajowa). I browsed the book for an hour to provide exact citation, but unfortunately I was not able to locate it.

Here's another by the same author, but in print. The title suggests that it may be hyped:

Werwolf!: The History of the National Socialist Guerrilla Movement, 1944-1946 by Alexander Perry Biddiscombe

Here's an online article purporting to tell the story of the 1944-45 Werewolf movement:
http://www.findarticles.com/cf_dls/m1373/10_50/ 66157021/p1/article.jhtml

(Note that in early paragraphs, 1944 etc is rendered 1044 etc.)

I have that book (ISBN 0-7524-1793-2) and it is an interesting read, had it for a year I think (published in 2000).
