Does anyone know what the starting salary was in 1936 for the various officer ranks and at what age they would expect to achieve said ranks? Thanks in advance.

Not sure about salaries, but a crude average age during WW II of a Rear Admiral was around 50, a Vice Admiral around 54, and a full Admiral around 57. The war would have accelerated the promotional patterns somewhat however - so perhaps the average was a little older in the 1930s.

Some senior oficers were quite young of course. Just a few examples.

Vice Admirals Vian and Daniel held that rank in the later part of the War at the age of 50.

Rear Admirals Sir Geoffrey Oliver and Hon. Sir Guy Russell were born in 1898 and were thus relatively young pups at 47 by War-end.

Several full Admirals were born in 1889 / 1890. Mountbattern of course was a full Admiral, yet born at the astonishingly late date of 1900!

In comparison generals and air marshals tended to be, on average, a year or so younger than their naval equivalents.

I can't comment on more junior ranks - though one might assume Captains & Commodores (Colonels and Brigadiers) would be in their late 40s on
