I know this is easy for you guys, so I'll be brief:

Since a Lieutenant is inferior in rank to a Major, why are Major Generals inferior in rank to a Lieutenant General?

Because the original title was a Sergeant Major General, but then I believe that the real Sergeant Major complained enough.

'General' originally meant 'overall,' just as it still does in 'Attorney General' or 'Postmaster General.' Three hundred or so years ago the commander of an army was the Captain General, the captain over all the other captains. The second in command was the Lieutenant General. Their assistant for organization and administration of the army was he Sergeant-Major General. Over the years Captain General was shortened to General, and the 'Sergeant' was dropped, leaving just Major General.
