I have my father's separation record and discharge papers. I know that he travelled on troopships twice and by LST once. The pictures of the LST are lost and the name he remembers of the troopship is not in any of the records that I have found on line but is close to a couple of them.

I know where to get my father's military records and I know that it is possible that his records were destroyed in a fire.

What I want to know before spending the money is if they exist will these records show what ships he traveled on?

You might have better luck looking for his unit's history. That might possibly contain the information you are looking for.

JDupre, I have seen your question on various groups, I kept hoping someone would have a positive answer for you, but nothing real positive so far. You got some very good advice from Michael.

I would think: Send for his records, the cost is not that great, and they might help with other couriosities,,, and if you don't, you will probably always wonder what they hold. Sometimes surprises are good!

An informed guess: If he traveled with his unit, his individual personel file records would probably not show the ship. If he travelled independently, they might because he was under the command of someone during transit. The records should show when he was with what command. However, even if somewhat 'independent', there was probably some 'command' for the transit, for example 'Casual Company, H & S Battalion,

True but he was only in a couple of construction battalions with four digit designations late in the war and during the early part of the occupation of Japan. Haven't found any kind of history of them yet.

John could you give us the unit numbers and names. You said he was attached to various contruction units. It is possible that these units have active alumni associations.

Sure.

Company A 1298 Engineering Construction Battalion.

Company A 1393 Engineering Construction Battalion.

I have seen some of the letters he recieved while in Japan and one dated Nov. 10, 1945 says

Co A 1298 Eng C. Bn 2nd Marine Div. APO San Francisco

He was definitely army so I guess his unit was co-located with the 2nd Marine Division or somehow used the 2nd MarDiv as a mail stop?

Another one shows the 1393 at Fukuoka, Kysushu Japan also in November 45.

The last one which was actually delivered to Japan after he left and then forwarded to the states shows his last billet as Ashiya Air Strip in January 46.

My town library has some of the Green Books on the US Army in WW2 and I will look into them once I start working normal hours again.

Thanks for the interest.
