I was wondering how many Tiger tanks would the US forces (not the British and Canadians) have faced in combat (not just knocked out due to air action) from June 6th to September 1944 ? US soldiers faced large numbers of Panthers, but I have my doubts about the number of Tigers.

Total of Tigers in Normandy, France 1944.

sSS PzAbt 101 45 Tiger 1.

sSS PzAbt 102 45 Tiger 1.

sPzAbt 503 33 Tiger 1, 12 Tiger II.

(fkl)316 Attached to Pz Lehr. 3 Tiger 1, 5 TigerII.

The 5 Lehr Tiger II's saw very limited action against US forces as they neared the Seine. No one knows where its 3 Tiger 1's saw action or met their end.

SS 101 reached the front on June 13, SS 102 on July 9th and Heer 503 on July 11th.

Both SS 101 and Heer 503 had limited re-equipment with Tiger II's (14 each) and saw combat with these tanks in late August 1944.

The first Tiger to be knocked out by a Sherman was during the Operation Goodwood (surrounding and taking of Caen 16 -19th july) It was a firefly which had a 76mm gun.

{snip re Tigers}

First Tiger II at any rate, and it had been rammed by Lt Gormans 75mm Sherman first. Lt Gorman abandoned this tank and went back for a firefly and destroyed both the Tiger II and a Tiger I nearby. Gorman had a rather exciting career, being one of the first across Nijmegen bridge as well.

Cheers

[snip]

Mayhap a modern day Rollo Gillespie? King certainly got his shilling's worth out of Squire Gorman any road.

{snip re Lt John Gorman}

IIRC he was awarded the Military Cross for destroying the Tiger II by ramming and was later knighted - a Sir John Gorman attended the Irish Guards Association annual dinner in 2003 accompanied by his son and grandson, both officers (or ex officers) in the Irish Guards as well.

Cheers

The German side of this TII loss on 18/7/44 (it can not be said it was the first TII lost in the West because several were knocked out on this the first day of Goodwood)is that it backed through a hedge and hit the Sherman coming towards it. Then a nearby Pak hit the TII by mistake and that is what immobilised it. Despite Gorman's claim at least one of the Tiger crew (Thaysen) got away to fight another day
