Over at World War 2 OnLine there's a big debate about the front turrent armour thinkness of the Panzer III H.

Currently in game, it's set to a 37mm think curved mantlent, *with an addiontial layer of armour under it of 30mm*.

Unforunalty, despite 17 pages of aruguing and much production of old photographs, no one has been able to conclusivly prove wether that exta 30mm of armour exists or not. Everyone agrees the mantlet is 37mm thick.

Could anyone be able to quote a book/author/page number stating the correct armour thickness? Everyone agree's that the superstructre of the H WAS upgraded, but axis players say there's an extra 30mm under it, and allied players say there isn't.

_Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War Two_, Chamberlain and Doyle, p 64.

Armor (mm/angle) Front...

Turret 30/13 deg Superstructure 30+30/90 deg Hull 30+30/23 deg Gun mantlet 37/0-45 deg

I don't know what the 'mantlet' is, exactly. I believe it is the block through which the gun barrel comes out. As such it covers only the area immediately around the barrel (within 10-15 cm of it at most). The rest of the turret front is just the front plate.
